Note from our Founder

Every hiring decision is ultimately a bet on the future. Hiring is about more than filling an opening. It’s a decision about the kind of organization you hope to become.

The best hiring processes aren’t just about checking boxes. They’re about identifying people who will strengthen culture, build trust, solve problems, and positively impact students and communities over time.

That’s one reason talent decisions matter so much in education. A strong leader or team member can influence an organization for years. So can the wrong fit.

Across the education sector, summer is often a season of transition and new beginnings. Every new hire represents possibility — not just for an organization, but for the students, educators, and communities ultimately served by that work.

As always, thank you for the work you do to make a difference in education.

Master Behavioral Interview Techniques and Predict Future Performance

Interviews should reveal fit, not just check boxes. This resource teaches behavioral interview techniques that work: the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), creating competency-based questions, using scoring rubrics to eliminate bias, and conducting structured evaluations. Move from guessing to certainty by gathering proof of past performance, the best predictor of future success.

Interviewing with brainfog

There are many things that can create barriers to success in an interviewing process. Nerves, lack of processing time, struggles to navigate neurotypical communication norms (i.e. eye contact, cues, lack of clarity in questions, no structure in the interview or process all together, etc), un-trained interviewers, just to name a few. One other barrier that some people might experience is brain fog, whether it’s a side effect from COVID-19, part of a chronic condition, a trauma response, perimenopause/menopause, or from other sources.

Brain fog can show up in a variety of ways, including blanking on words or forgetting relevant stories. Beyond seeking medical attention if you’re experiencing persistent or sudden/extreme brain fog, here is how you can position yourself for success when interviewing:

  1. When possible, schedule interviews for the times of day when you are most alert.
  2. Anticipate interview questions (AI is helpful here - prompt your AI assistant of choice to anticipate interview questions based on a job description, and provide it the job description link or copy/paste text from the description).
  3. Prepare and practice answers to these likely interview questions, really going deep into a few key stories versus coming up with every possible scenario. Depth will be better than breadth, whether or not you experience brain fog.
  4. Jot down a few notes with headlines for those stories on a sheet of paper that you can reference during your interview. Also print out your resume and have it easily accessible during your interview.
  5. Don’t let the interview be your first conversation of the day. Consider hopping on a zoom or phone call with someone you trust to chat and get the nerves out before your interview.
  6. Consider letting the interviewer know you could benefit from a bit more process time (I don’t recommend saying “brain fog”), and thank them in advance for allowing you to reference your notes, jot down a couple notes before speaking, or take a beat longer before answering.
