Is Collaborative Intelligence The Future Of Work?

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

“What is “normal” when it comes to application updates” and other questions from job seekers.

Every week, we receive questions from clients and jobseekers about job search trends and how to approach different job search situations. Here are recent questions from a jobseeker and Ana’s answers:

“Is it commonplace these days not to hear back either way? I feel like there are so many places that I haven’t heard from. What is the standard amount of time to wait to hear back? Is it rude to ask about an update?

It takes so much time to research roles, tailor and submit your application materials. Not to mention the courage and vulnerability to put yourself out there and wait to be evaluated by professionals in your current or desired field. And when you don’t hear back, it can be confusing, frustrating, and demoralizing.

In organizations with well-staffed talent acquisition teams and thoughtfully designed talent strategy, candidates should expect updates within 2 weeks. As you may have read about, observed, or personally experienced, many organizations across industries are down-sizing and talent teams have been impacted harder than others. That means that not only are there smaller talent acquisition teams reviewing applications, there are also an increasing number of candidates applying to roles in every job function. If you’re not hearing back within two weeks of submitting an application - whether it is an invitation to interview or a rejection - this could be why.

Unless otherwise stated on the application (i.e. “please do not call or email our team for an update”), it is perfectly appropriate to reach out for an update, especially if you’re approaching two weeks since you applied. Here is sample language:

“Hello, My name is [insert your name] and I submitted an application for the [insert name of role and job ID number if you have it] on [date you applied]. I’m incredibly excited about the possibility of joining your team as [insert position title] and am energized by your mission to [briefly state the organization’s mission]. I understand you may still be reviewing applications for the role and appreciate your consideration of my materials. When can I expect to receive an update regarding my application status?

Thank you again for your time and consideration. I have attached my resume in case it is helpful.

Best, [insert your name]”

If you are experiencing constant rejections or no updates following your application submissions, these are important data points for you to consider. Perhaps the roles you’re applying for may be a stretch and your profile isn’t speaking to recruiters. Or, if you are confident that you are uniquely qualified to add value, maybe your application materials aren’t communicating that effectively to external audiences. If you’re not sure, it can be helpful to ask someone you trust - with experience hiring in your desired industry/role - for feedback.
