Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

What are appropriate asks when networking with someone at a target employer?
|
|
|
Are you leveraging networking as part of your job-seeking strategy, but struggling with making appropriate “asks” of your network? Here are some reasonable requests you can consider making of your network (people you know - whether casually or intimately),and requests to avoid.
Reasonable requests of your network (assuming they are not the hiring manager):
- “Given what you know about me and the role, would you be open to flagging my name for the hiring manager?
- “I’m hoping to gain some insight about this role/team/organization prior to applying - would you be open to chatting with me or connecting me with the right person?”
- “I want to put my best foot forward on this application. Would you be open to quickly reviewing my resume and/or sharing some tips from your own hiring process?”
Reasonable requests of your network (if they are the hiring manager)
- “I’m very interested in this role on your team, but am hoping to gain some insight prior to applying - would you be open to a quick phone call in the next few days?”
- “I’m very interested in this role on your team and plan on submitting by tomorrow - please look out for my application.”
Note that all of these requests are pretty direct - there’s no need to schedule a call with someone at your target company to “discuss their career journey” when you actually just hope they’ll consider flagging your name for the hiring team (unless you really want to chat with someone about their career journey!). Also note that I often recommend giving someone an out (i.e. “if you’re open to it”) to avoid any discomfort if the person is not open (because they don’t have time, they’re not interested, or perhaps have a policy that they cannot flag a name or provide feedback on your application). Lastly, you know your own communication style and preferences, and also may have great insight into the style and preferences of those in your network - follow your instinct with how your message might be best received.
