Can you conduct informational interviews at a

company while you’re actually interviewing there?

Let’s say you recently applied for a job and already have an interview scheduled. Congrats! But let’s say you also have a lot of questions about the role, organization’s mission, strategy, and culture that weren’t easily addressed on the website. This happened to a job seeker I spoke with this week, and she was wondering if it was still ok to conduct informational interviews with staff at that organization while also conducting an actual interview. Yes, here’s how.

First of all, interviews are a great place to learn more about an organization. An interviewer will typically allot a few minutes at the end of the call to answer any questions you have, whether they’re about logistics or about the role/team/organization. Ask yourself if the nature of your questions seems appropriate for that time or if you actually need to learn more before the interview (both to make an informed decision and to prepare).

If your questions need answering before the interview, it’s ok to reach out to staff (not the hiring manager who is about to interview you) to ask if they’re open to connecting. Be transparent. Share that you have an interview coming up, you’re incredibly excited, and would love to connect with other staff about their own work/experiences at the organization. Chances are you’ll get some positive responses from folks who are open to speaking to a potential colleague.
