Job-searching after extended work gap

Many adults take extended breaks from work to focus on caregiving responsibilities for their children or aging family members. How can you position yourself to re-enter the workforce following many years away? Here are some tips:

  1. Reflect on your goals and target positions. What problems are you most energized and qualified to solve based on your experience and credentials?
  2. Research the desired credentials, skills, and professional landscape for your target role and industry. When possible, seek out ways to gain experience in those areas through boot camps, certifications, or coursera programs.
  3. Update your job-seeking materials, primarily your resume and LinkedIn profile. Address your career gap directly, just as you would any other job-title - “Full-Time Caregiver, Self-Employed Year – Year”. Consider expanding on the ways you spent your time, like volunteering in your community or children’s school, side-hustles, part-time jobs, managing the scheduling and finances for your household, or you can also leave blank - this is up to you. On LinkedIn, in your experience section, you can also add a Career Break. Make sure to add all technical skills, certifications, and relevant coursera courses to your resume and LinkedIn profile as well.
  4. Network! Are there meet-ups for professionals in your industry, or for caregivers returning to work (I actually just received an invite to an event like this in my own city!)? Reach out to former colleagues, trusted friends, or people in your community to let them know about your intention to return to work and ask for leads about opportunities they’re aware of or people they can connect you with.
  5. Directly address your career break in interviews or networking conversations: “I spent the last 5 years as a full-time caregiver, and volunteered extensively at my local district during that time. With my passion for [insert industry], I’ve kept up with the latest research and also completed [list boot camps, certifications, coursera courses, volunteer work in the field]. I’m incredibly excited about the work you are doing here at [list company name], and in particular feel like my extensive experience doing [list your areas of expertise] aligns well with the demands of the role.”
