Job-seeking over the summer
|

|
If you’re job-seeking right now, you might have experienced longer processes and more emails going unanswered. That’s likely because you’re job-seeking over the summer, when many American employees take vacation. You might be taking vacation too, and navigating complex scheduling between multiple parties. Here are some ways to navigate the unique summer job-seeking challenges:
- Approach scheduling issues and lack of response with a spirit of generosity. The person you’re emailing with might be on vacation or performing the roles of several colleagues who are on vacation. Be kind and patient.
- Ask for clarity about when you can expect communication. A quick framing of “I understand that things move slowly over the summer given vacations and team transitions. When can I expect an update from your team?”
- Check your email, text, and voicemail daily - recruiters and hiring teams typically go for email for official communication, but I know many who find phone calls and text messages more efficient, especially during the summer months. Have you cleaned out your voicemail lately?
- If a few weeks have passed since your last interview or last communication with a recruiter or hiring manager, and you haven’t received an update, a gracious, polite follow-up is very appropriate. See my recommendation in #2 for suggested language.
- Share your own schedule proactively - if you’re traveling abroad and the time change and different phone plans make text or phone call tricker, communicate your preference for email and planned zoom, facetime, whatsapp, skype calls. Share multiple options for when you’re available to interview or connect, and times when that will be trickier based on your work and personal commitments over the summer.
Know that vacations aren’t the only thing holding a hiring team back from responding to you in a timely manner. The reality is that they may be understaffed or lack strong communication/talent acquisition systems. When in doubt, assume positive intent, and also keep your door open for additional opportunities with other employers!

The See Forever Foundation (SFF) which operates the Maya Angelou Public Charter School network (MAS) is seeking a dedicated and experienced leader to manage daily administrative operations including but not limited to human resources, finance, procurement, information technology, facilities, government relations, vendor relationships, and compliance. This person will manage multiple budgets, high-level hiring processes, contracting, and contract negotiations, including the multi-million dollar contracts the organization maintains.
The ideal candidate has 10+ years of relevant experience in cross-functional leadership, especially a focus on finance. This person also has a proven track record of results in and working knowledge of public school, public school district, and/or charter management organization (CMO) operations. Experience in nonprofits is preferred.

The ideal candidate has 7+ years of overall accounting experience, including a minimum of 5 years in a management role.
