Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Telling a beloved boss/colleague you accepted a new role

One of the many ways I support my clients is by helping them prepare for transition conversations with their managers and colleagues. Finding a new role can be so bittersweet - the excitement about a dream position mixed with the dread of telling your colleagues you’re leaving. This makes sense! We spend so much time at work. Sometimes, work friends become out-of-work friends. Telling your colleagues and managers you’re leaving can fill some with enormous guilt. Here are some tips:

  1. Share the news in-person/virtually via email or text.
  2. Be direct and avoid a ton of qualifiers: “I’m sharing some personal news. I was offered a role at [insert company] as their new [insert role]. They’d like me to start on [insert date].”
  3. Provide context about your decision: “This was a tough decision for me, but ultimately I was motivated by [share rationale - things like the scope of the role, total compensation, location, level of seniority, etc.].”
  4. Reiterate your appreciation for your manager and colleagues: “I want you to know how much I’ve enjoyed working with you. In particular [share what you love about working with them].”
  5. Talk about your transition plan: “I value this team and want to ensure I’m transitioning work responsibilities/contacts in the most effective way. Here’s my plan: [insert plan]. What do you think?”
  6. Allow them to ask questions and process the news. This will look different for everyone!

It can be scary to tell your manager that you’re leaving, whether or not you have a strong relationship. Practicing these conversations with someone you trust can make them go smoother.
