Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

“What’s your greatest weakness?”

In the last few weeks, I’ve had a couple of clients ask me for advice on preparing for the potential of a “what’s your greatest weakness”-style interview question. To me, this is a worthless question - no one is perfect, and what some people may describe as a “weakness” could be viewed as a strength in other contexts. Most skilled interviewers aren’t going to ask this question, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to evaluate your self-awareness around your working style or capacity to take on a role. Here are the questions you can anticipate instead:

  • What might colleagues say is the best part about working with you? What might they say is the most challenging part about working with you?
  • During our busy season, aspects of this role can get challenging - tight deadlines, a lot of pressure, a lot of competing priorities, etc. How do you approach busy seasons and/or stress at work?
  • Given what you understand about this role, where do you have the most experience and where are you still developing your skill-set?
  • We are really looking for a candidate who has a background in [insert skills] and understands the nuances of our industry. I couldn’t get a sense of the extent of your experience with these skills on your resume - could you expand on that?
  • From reading the job description and previous conversations with our team, what aspects of the role seem most energizing to you? What is less interesting?

No interviewer expects a “perfect” candidate - they don’t exist! But, they are looking forward to a conversation with you that will uncover your values, work style, skill-set, professional areas that bring you joy, and your overall work experience. If you have been invited to an interview, the employer has already deemed that you are qualified (or at least they’re pretty sure you’re qualified and they want to get to know you better). The best way to prepare for questions that measure your self-awareness and capacity to take on a role is to study the job description, review the mission and priorities for the employer, and reflect on your own relevant/transferable experience. Good luck!
