Even if businesses open up, that doesn’t mean you are personally ready to go back to work in person. Unless a job description explicitly states that a job must be performed in person, consider asking if work location is negotiable.  Here’s a strategy you can tailor to discuss working from home with a potential employer:

 

  • Wait until you have a formal job offer vs. the interviewing stage - you will be better positioned to advocate for yourself and negotiate
  • Inquire how they’ve approached “Work From Home” as cities have “reopened”
  • Share that you’re excited about the position and  employer, but currently have significant reservations about working in an office/campus/etc.
  • Ask: “Given these unique current circumstances, are you open to accommodating my need to work from home for  the next [insert your desired amount of time]?"
  • If the employer is pretty comfortable with WFH already, but what you really need is flexible work hours (i.e. working early mornings and late nights so you can also support young learners in your home with virtual learning), consider requesting that as well or instead. 

 

Don’t forget - If you already have a job offer, you have the power to negotiate. Don’t be afraid to advocate for your incredibly important needs during these uncertain times.
