How to come up with resume bullets
Many of my resume clients come to me with writer’s block. They’re not sure what information to include, or where to begin when coming up with results.
Your resume is one of the ways in which you can market your impact in current/past professional roles. It shows the problems you’ve solved, the goals you’ve met or exceeded, and the initiatives you’ve started or led. It can demonstrate awards received, certifications earned, unique technical skills, presentations and media mentions, and volunteer roles outside of your paid work. It’s often your first opportunity to compel a hiring team to interview you and not someone else.
If you’re struggling to write resume content, know that every bullet is an opportunity to share the story of your impact. When a resume reads like a job description, it tells me nothing about the scope of the project or whether or not that project yielded any wins. Consider using your job description or job responsibilities as a starting point to inspire your resume bullets. Write them out on a separate document, and begin listing out the impact you’ve had in each responsibility - specific projects, goals met/exceeded, results produced, etc. Look at old performance review documents, or individual/team dashboards if you’re feeling stuck. Chances are, once you start brainstorming wins, you’ll begin remembering projects you’ve forgotten and feel energized to continue coming up with more content!
Upon generating a solid amount of wins for each responsibility, identify the most compelling content and transfer it to your resume. There’s not a right number of bullets per job, but likely somewhere between 4-8 will suffice (unless you are an executive overseeing multiple functions). Save the original brainstorming document and make a point to update it quarterly. Your future self will thank you!
