Are you wondering how to show gratitude to those who have supported you during your current or recent job search? I can’t speak for every person you’ve connected with in recent months, but few are checking mailboxes wondering when their thank you gift will arrive. If someone took the time to meet you for coffee or answer a few questions over the phone, they did so because they were happy to help!
Here are some ideas of ways to show gratitude that don’t involve sending thank you gifts:
- Send a thank you email or card. Go beyond thanking them for their time, and share specifics about how their support has helped you in your search.
- Text! Not everyone enjoys formal emails and cards - your thank you text, especially a few days or weeks after the initial connection could really make someone’s day.
- Shout someone out on LinkedIn! If someone or various people have been instrumental in your job search, whether they made intros or offered valuable advice, let your network know!
- Don’t wait to send a big thank you - end a meeting sharing your big take-aways from your conversation, and how you plan on implementing their advice. For those who are wondering if they’ve been helpful, they’ll appreciate the immediate feedback!
- Check-in and follow-up months after you connected, whether via email, phone call, text, coffee, etc - let them know how your search has progressed since your initial meeting, and how much it still means to you that they took the time.
