Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

A client and I were working on his application materials for a cool role, when we noticed a position that had been posted just that morning was no longer on the employer’s website. We were both so bummed! Has this happened to you?

If a position is taken down, it likely means one of the following: the role has been filled, the hiring manager is still interviewing but has more than enough qualified candidates, or hiring might be frozen for this role and it will not be filled at this time. Here’s how I advised the client to proceed given that this individual was still very invested in applying.

- Find out if there’s an email address for the recruiter hiring for this role - there might be a specific contact person or at least a generic recruitment email address you can contact.

- If you find a specific person or at least a generic recruitment contact, send a short email to express your interest and inquire if they are still open to considering your application. Here’s some sample language:

Dear [insert recruiter name],

I hope my email finds you well. My name is [insert your name] and I’m reaching out regarding the [insert the name of the role] position I recently saw advertised on your career page. I completed my application materials, but when I went to submit this morning I noticed the position was no longer posted. Are you open to considering more candidates at this time? I have attached my resume for your reference.

Thank you so much for your time. I am a big fan of your organization and will continue to check back on your career page for this opportunity or similar ones which might be a good match for my skills and experience.

Best, [insert your name].

- Though this email won’t guarantee you are immediately considered, especially if the position has been filled or hiring is frozen, a recruiter will likely still review your resume, AND, if they do believe you are a competitive candidate given the existing pool, they may forward your email and resume to the hiring manager.

- If you have any personal connections within that organization, you could also consider sending them a text or email to inquire if they have any context about the position. They may also be able to move your application to the recruiter or hiring manager.

My client followed both these methods and their application was considered even though the role was no longer publicly posted!
