Every February, Black History Month rolls around, and organizations scramble to get programming together to mark the occasion. With little advance planning and strategic thought, many issue statements that sound hollow and perform actions devoid of real meaning or impact. So how can your organization celebrate Black History Month in a meaningful way and avoid this pitfall?

K-12 schools continue to grapple with how to best (or even at all) integrate Black history into social studies and language arts curricula outside of the introduction during Black History Month. The integration of Black history into U.S. core curricula is a missed opportunity, especially in elementary school, a period in young children’s development during which there is boundless potential to nurture their creativity.

Black history is American history. Initially, the dialogue around Black History Month focused on youth education efforts in primary and secondary schools, as well as at the college level, about Black Americans’ contributions to American history and culture. This article provides some resources to deepen your understanding as well as celebrate Black History Month.

Responding to feelings of guilt and insecurity before launching your job search

“Sometimes I think I should just be grateful for what I have now and not start a job search. I worry that I’ll never find a higher compensation or better title, and honestly I’m too scared to try. Maybe I’m not worth it after all. I should just stay where I am.”
This was the sentiment a jobseeker shared with me last week, and one that I’ve heard frequently from clients over the years who feel guilty about stepping out on their current employer or insecure about their prospects.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with loving where you work and wanting to stay there! I love when I connect with people who are truly satisfied professionally, and all their needs are being met. But if you have an itch to explore what’s next, don’t feel guilty about applying to new roles.
I encouraged this jobseeker to begin reframing the issue in their head. Instead of the narrative that the employer is solving their problem (i.e. needing a job/salary/benefits), it should really be the other way around. Employees solve the core problems of a business - we perform roles that help businesses (and districts, nonprofits, foundations, etc.) operate and meet their goals! Employers are grateful to have talented employees, and hopefully will show that gratitude by offering great work environments, ample learning/growth opportunities, excellent benefits, and competitive compensation.
With a reframe about the role you play in a business (i.e. you are solving specific problems within the business), you can begin to think of yourself as someone who solves problems and adds value. Be your own hype person! Once you are clear on the value you provide and the problems you solve at your current job, continue solving your current employer’s problems (and maybe ask for a raise!) or confidently test the waters elsewhere. You do not owe one employer your entire career.
