Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Have you been interviewing for roles, but not having much success? You may consider asking your interviewers for feedback. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Even the most well-intentioned interviewers may decline to give you feedback. It’s not you - they may not know how, be worried about how you’ll receive the feedback, or they may have a general policy around saying no.

  • You may not agree with the feedback. Perhaps they point to a perceived gap in skill that you actually believe to be a strength. Or maybe they question your interest in the role/organization.

  • The feedback may not be particularly helpful. It might be vague, or focus on factors outside of your control.

Post-interview feedback can also be powerful and extremely valuable:

  • It’s an opportunity to pinpoint specific focus areas for your own development. Your interview may provide some great feedback that allows you to strategically grow in a particular area.

  • It provides a pathway to continue the relationship with this particular employer. Stay in touch regarding future roles, or share updates once you’ve acted on that feedback (i.e. gotten experience in a particular area, pursued ongoing education, etc.).

I’m a big fan of feedback, and think it can help JobSeekers grow and position themselves for great success. If you do end up asking for feedback, and you receive it, I encourage you to thank the interviewer, share any take aways, and extend your hope that you can stay in touch.
