Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
Should I apply for a role I’m only mildly curious about?
A client of mine has a great gig right now and a niche skillset. They enjoy their role, have great relationships with colleagues and leadership, and are compensated well. But, a peer organization just posted a rare leadership opportunity and my client is mildly curious. They have job security and feel fulfilled. But they can’t shake the feeling that they’ll regret it if they don’t explore or apply for this position. This is a highly respected organization, and the role presents an opportunity for greater impact. What should they do?
I used to encourage all clients to reach out to recruiters to make a connection prior to applying, but given lack of recruiter capacity for informational calls (due to a high degree of applications, smaller recruiting teams, etc.) I almost always recommend clients apply first. In this case, I would still recommend my client attempt to connect with the recruiter first because:
- This is a highly technical C-Suite role. Recruiters tend to prioritize cultivating top candidates for hard-to-fill positions, and have a smaller qualified pool to choose from for this very specialized opportunity (think a role akin to a nonprofit Chief Financial Officer, Head of Technology, etc for a nonprofit versus something in Talent or Programming).
- The client isn’t actively job searching and they’re not sure if they want to invest time into applying for a role, especially because they’re happy and have job security.
- The client fears that if they apply, and word got back to their employer, they could risk their security/happiness at work. With a request for an informational conversation, they’re able to ask for discretion.
It’s a strategic idea to build relationships with leaders in your industry, and keep doors open. That being said, we are in the era of the “Great Stay” where employees are generally more risk-averse about rocking the boat with their current employer given current economic conditions. As you’re considering applying to other roles for fun or engaging in informational conversations, operate with care.
