Should I re-apply to roles with organizations that have previously rejected me?
Have you thought about applying to jobs with organizations that have rejected you in the past, and aren’t sure whether or not to proceed? Yes, you can absolutely do this! Here are some tips before you apply:
- Reflect on where you’ve landed in the past with this particular employer. Have you moved forward to interview or received an offer, or received an immediate rejection following your application?
- If you received immediate rejections, this is likely a reflection that your resume and/or cover letter are not demonstrating your capacity to perform this job, and you should revamp your resume and write a new cover letter before re-applying.
- If you consistently make it to an interview round, it likely means you’ve applied to roles with materials that have demonstrated you are qualified, but your interview skills will likely need fine-tuning. I would also recommend updating your resume and cover letter to personalize for these new positions and new experiences you’ve had since your last application.
If you’ve received any kind of feedback from this employer during past applications, ensure you incorporate it into your application and interview answers this time around. You can even name that you’re doing this - “I received incredibly valuable feedback when I interviewed with your team last year, and have been thoughtful about approaching this process in a much more strategic way. Thank you so much for giving me an opportunity to once again connect with you about the potential of joining your time.”
