With Policing in The Spotlight, Districts Search for Alternatives to SROs
More and more conversations are happening about School Resource Officers on campus. This article shares new data, reflections, and models on the role across the country.
I got a great question from a job seeker recently who wanted to know how many minutes a typical networking or informational meeting should be. Should they request 15 minutes or an hour? How can you get the information you need while also being respectful of someone else’s time?
First, be clear on what you hope to learn in a networking meeting. Are you asking a couple of questions about a company, or are you hoping to dig into someone’s career trajectory? Can your questions be answered through some easy online research, or are you hoping to build a relationship with someone over time? Knowing your goals will give you a sense of how long you need.
Typical networking meetings will last between 15 minutes and an hour. It can be helpful when requesting a meeting to share what you hope to learn in a conversation and then give the recipient a range of time for the call. Here’s an example:
“ Dear Ms. Chang,
My name is Ana, and I’m currently an Instructional Coach at ABC School District, where I’ve worked for the last 4 years. I’m relocating to Omaha this summer and was excited to learn about the work happening at DEF School District! I noticed on your LinkedIn profile that you’re a Principal within the district and have been there for 5 years. I would love to learn more about your experience as a leader there and your own decision to grow from teaching into school leadership within the district.
I imagine you have a lot on your plate as the school year winds down, but would you be open to a short phone call to help me learn more about DEF District and your own trajectory there? I was thinking around 30 minutes, but I want to honor your time. I’m flexible over the next two weeks - is there a time that works well for you?
Thanks so much for considering this request, and no pressure if this isn’t a good time to connect. I wish you the best of luck as you close out the school year!”
