Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

I’ve never posted on LinkedIn. Is it strategic to make my first-ever post about looking for a new role?

My goals as a career coach are to help you achieve your job-searching success, not to win the influencer game. You can launch a successful job search and grow your thought leadership without a LinkedIn profile! Consider LinkedIn a tool in your job-seeking toolkit, versus the entire strategy! With that, read on for some considerations for navigating LinkedIn…

I’ve worked with many clients in recent months who are reluctantly ready to get on the LinkedIn bandwagon. They are resuscitating inactive profiles, and updating their job history since the current role listed happened 3 jobs ago. Their goals are three-fold - passively attract new opportunities, generally build their leadership brand, and optimize their chances of success during current/future job searches. One client asked today, “is it ok to make my first-ever LinkedIn post an announcement that I’m open for new opportunities?”

If you’ve never posted on LinkedIn, you’ll likely find that your first post won’t get a ton of traction in the form of likes, views, or comments. While an “open to opportunities” post can play a strategic role in helping you get job leads from your network and beyond, it won’t work as hard for you if it isn’t widely seen. Consider employing or tailoring this strategy instead:

  1. Spend time hanging out in your LinkedIn feed to see how other people in your network engage with the platform, whether they’re writing/sharing their own original content, reposting information, or commenting frequently. See what you’d like to try out for yourself.
  2. Before making a big announcement, consider doing some career story telling for yourself instead. Write a post introducing yourself. Name that this is your first ever post and your network will get to see more of your content in the near future. This is your chance to contextualize more posts coming their way, seemingly out of nowhere if this is new, and an invitation for your network to give you some grace as you figure out your style!
  3. Share some posts over the course of a few weeks with accomplishments you’re proud of, or industry news that feels meaningful. Spend some time reading other users’ posts and commenting as well!
  4. Now that you’re building engagement and increasing your network’s understanding of your work and professional areas of expertise, this is a great time to share that you’re open to new opportunities.

I am just one person, and there’s no single path to getting LinkedIn “right.” LinkedIn is also an ever-evolving platform, and the rules of engagement will continue to change. In the last few years, I’ve seen clients leverage their own story telling on LinkedIn (via posts) to land interviews, new business, partnerships, board invitations, and more.
