We all generally have an idea of what a gifted student should look like. Therefore, it might come as a surprise when a study finds that, when using the same standardized assessment, students might be rated differently from classroom to classroom.

Participation in advanced courses matters because students who take them (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, dual-enrollment and honors classes) are more likely to succeed in postsecondary education. However, too many Black and Latino students are often not given the appropriate opportunities to attend these courses.

How Many Resumes Should I Write?
|
For current job seekers, you may have heard advice that it’s important to tailor your resume to each role you apply to. But what happens if you’re submitting 10, 20, or 50+ applications? Does that mean you need that many resumes? NO. So how do you tailor your resume and not spend every hour of the day writing new resumes? Here are my suggestions:
|
|
|
- Create one master resume. This resume might be longer than what you normally send out because you include many bullets with various impact statements for each position. Then, when you apply for roles, you can delete less relevant bullets and focus on bullets/statements which are aligned with the target position.
- Read job descriptions and ask yourself:
- What is the problem this professional will be solving?
- Have I conveyed examples of times I’ve solved similar problems (i.e. a candidate applying for a fundraising position would share examples of grants they’ve written/secured, events they’ve managed, and/or donors they’ve cultivated)?
- Does the language I’ve used to convey my impact match the terms in the job description (i.e. if you are applying for an instructional design role and the job description references “training” but you’ve used the term “professional development" in your resume, just change it to match the job posting language).
- Focus on a few types of roles versus EVERY kind of role for which you qualify. Though you may still apply for multiple positions, they should all be similar in scope (i.e. project management roles, school leader positions, talent management positions, etc.). If you find that you’re applying to too many different job functions, it’s time to get more focused to spare your time and energy and also concentrate your branding efforts in one direction. When you focus, you won’t need multiple resumes, but rather, small tweaks in language.
