Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
What’s the difference between a cover letter, educational philosophy statement, and a personal statement?
|
|
|
As a recruiter, I frequently saw candidates replace cover letters with educational philosophies or personal statements, and the reality is these are three very different documents. Though cover letters may become obsolete in the next few years, clearly understanding the difference between all three documents will set you up for success in your job search.
Cover Letter: A cover letter is typically a 1-page document (2-pages for some of my executive candidates) outlining a job-seekers interest in a particular position with a particular employer. A strong cover letter answers the following 3 questions:
- Why this company (or school district, nonprofit, institution, etc.)?
- Why this job?
- Why you?
Educational Philosophy Statement: This is a 1-page or longer document detailing a candidate’s beliefs, values, and practices as they relate to teaching and learning. Some school districts require these as part of teaching and school leadership applications, but it is not a universal requirement. Education undergraduate and graduate students typically write a statement during their training.
Personal Statement: A personal statement is a 1-page or longer document that serves as a short career biography. It is not targeted at a particular role or employer, and focuses instead on a candidate’s career history and some of their personal experiences and values.
Many candidates make the mistake of submitting a personal statement in place of a cover letter, failing to personalize their statements for a particular role. I’ve also seen teaching candidates submit a generic educational philosophy statement in place of a cover letter, without clarifying their interest in or qualifications for a particular role. And sometimes, teaching and learning candidates may be asked to submit all three! Understanding the difference between these documents will set you up for success in the education job-search process.
