Job seekers today face a highly competitive market, with recruiters seeing an overwhelming number of applications for each open role. Career Corner

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Things you’re doing in a job search that make some recruiters cringe.

I polled my recruiter colleagues to get a sense of things job-seekers are doing these days that make them cringe. Just like no job-seeker is the same, recruiters are unique individuals too so something that annoys one person may not bother another. With that said, here are things my colleagues shared with me:

  1. Showing up on-site to hand a recruiter or hiring manager your resume. This strategy might still work with small businesses, especially those that are customer facing (like retail or restaurants), but for roles in education, nonprofits, and other social impact organizations avoid this strategy. Instead of standing out in a positive way, you’ll just be the person who interrupted the receptionist’s day who now has to run around finding the recruiter (who may be in a meeting or interview) to greet you. Trust me, whoever you meet with will just remind you to please go home and submit your application online.
  2. Emailing/calling for updates daily (when you’ve already been given a timeline by the recruiter and it’s on-track). Look, reaching out for an update when no update has been provided, or there’s no clarity about next steps makes sense. But reaching out daily for updates after you’ve been provided a timeline and process will give the recruiter/hiring manager pause about your professionalism and self-awareness.
  3. Asking “Do you have any reservations about me?” or “Is there anything I could have done better in this interview?” at the end of your interview. Many candidates want to demonstrate humility and a commitment to grow, but trust me this is not the way! Instead of demonstrating humility, you’re asking the recruiter or hiring manager to end the call by outlining all the things that gave them pause about your candidacy! If your goal is to clear up any misconceptions, you can instead ask: “Is there any topic we discussed that I didn’t fully expand upon, that I can do so now or in a follow-up email or conversation?”
  4. Incorporating outdated trends on your resume, such as an “objective statement,” a “personal interests” section, or the line “references available upon request.” While these might have been standard elements of resumes 20+ years ago, they no longer belong on your document. Replace the objective with a professional summary or bulleted list of career highlights, the personal interests section with your technical skills, and avoid mention of references because they no longer belong on a resume.
  5. Trying to make your resume stand out with graphics, colors, fonts, and formats instead of exceptionally clear, concise, and data-driven content. In this age where everyone seems to be a content creator or influencer, and people encourage you to focus on your “brand,” I understand the urge to get creative on your resume! Personally, I find graphics and colors distracting and would much prefer a candidate go for something easy to skim and that is laser-focused on impact.
  6. Applying to jobs at other organizations using your current work email address. No, just no. Even if you’ve been with the same employer for years, your work email should only be used for work performed as an employee of that organization! Everything you email from a work email account can technically be reviewed/audited by your current employer and it’s not a good look to apply for jobs or engage in conversations about outside employment. Consider creating a personal email address which includes your first and last name and make sure to check it regularly if you aren’t in the habit of doing so. If you receive outreach from a recruiter to your work email, direct them to contact you at your personal email instead.
