Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Have you ever spent weeks or more interviewing for a role, only to get a salary offer significantly below your desired range, and you turned down the offer? Wondering when to bring up salary and save time and energy for future job searches? You can bring up salary early in the process if a hiring manager or recruiter doesn’t share it with you. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • If a salary isn’t proactively shared on job descriptions, do your research. What does someone in this role/industry typically earn (salary + benefits)? Consider reviewing websites like glassdoor or asking people you may know with insight.
  • In your first interview, you’ll likely have a chance to ask a few questions at the end. Here’s a sample language: “Thanks so much for the chance to interview. I didn’t see it listed on the job description - can you share your budgeted range for this role?”
  • Prepare for the interviewer to either answer directly or instead ask you for your desired range. This part can be so nerve-racking! Here’s some sample language: “From my research, I understand that [insert name of role]s typically earn within [insert range]. Is this aligned to your budget?”
  • If you find out that their range is below your own requirements, you can let them know: Thanks for providing that range. Given my experience, I’m only moving forward with roles at the [insert range level]. Do you have any flexibility?”

More and more employers are moving towards salary transparency, but not all are there yet. Engaging in this conversation early on can help you advocate for yourself and your time.
