You Had Me At ‘Hello’—The Importance Of Candidate Experience

During a recruitment process, the employer experience is not the only experience that matters. The candidate experience, the interactions that a job seeker has with a company during recruitment, is equally as important. The tips in this article will give companies insights into how to improve candidate experience.

How The Candidate Experience is Evolving

In the current market, the ability to attract high-quality candidates and provide an engaging, streamlined, and fair hiring process is an essential competitive advantage. From the continued emphasis on work-life balance to the demand for flexibility and remote work, it’s clear that many key workplace trends of the past several years aren’t going anywhere. The HR teams that meet these needs will distinguish their companies and attract top talent in the years to come.

 Navigating job-search burnout

You’ve made a decision to start job-searching and perhaps you’re filled with curiosity and optimism. You tackle updating your resume and reading job descriptions, and you’ve already set up multiple networking calls and coffee dates. Weeks go by and you’re not seeing traction in your interview numbers, and some early leads have fizzled out. Now it’s been a couple months. That optimism turns to defeat. You’re exhausted and questioning everything. You’re burned out.

So many of us have been there. I connect with new clients every week who find themselves in that same position. Here’s how we re-set:

  1. Even if it feels like there’s no time to waste, prioritize self-care. Whether that is a few minutes a day or taking a week-off from the job-search, spending time on things that help you recharge are necessary so that you can power through the next stage of your search.
  2. Step-back and evaluate where you’ve been. I often recommend creating a simple tracker listing your past job applications and where you’ve landed in the job process. Are you noticing trends - for example, consistently receiving a rejection after the first interview? This can give you insights into where you should change course.
  3. Create a new plan with the insights you’ve gained, whether that means updating your job-search toolkit (ie resume, linkedin profile, etc.), reflecting on your personal value proposition, focusing on networking, or changing the roles you’re targeting.
  4. Set mini goals and a schedule. Benchmarks towards the major goal (ie job offer!) will help you stay engaged and feeling successful.
  5. Ask for help from friends and or colleagues with industry-specific insight. Prioritize people who have experience hiring in your sector, or who have navigated similar job-searches in the recent past.
  6. Seek out professional support. When the advice you’re finding on your own, or through your network fails, a career coach can support you in evaluating your strategy, updating your materials, and creating a new plan.
