6 Unique New Tools to Make Your Life Easier

In this edition of Leaders in Education, we will focus on the latest tools, resources,

and guidance for education leaders looking to be more productive.

Calendar

Even though you're using a digital calendar or other time management tool to become more organized and better with your time, you may feel like you are actually spending too much time entering and revising information across your tools. Calendar has created an AI-enabled solution that learns your schedule and takes over organizing, booking, and updating meetings and events on your calendar. It also syncs across multiple calendar tools and devices, saving you time and letting you focus on high priority tasks.

Station

Station is the desktop app for streamlining your accounts, apps, and workflows. Tired of switching between accounts, constantly logging in and out? Station is a logical and beautiful solution for managing everything better. Toggle between multiple Gmail, Outlook and Office 365 accounts without the hassle. Connect all of your email accounts as well as your favorite web apps and tools to Station. Then, customize your workstation so it’s just right.

Bit.ai

One of the biggest productivity killers in the workplace is coincidentally the various productivity tools we end up using in the first place. This is why we all need Bit.ai, a document management and collaboration tool that helps teams to collaborate, share, track and manage all company documents, files, and other content in one place. No more juggling around apps and tools! Bit.ai is the ultimate productivity tool as it brings all your company documentation, media files, and knowledge under one smart roof.

The Emergent Task Planner

The Emergent Task Planner (ETP) is a paper-based daily planning sheet designed to keep you focused in the face of chaos. Start the day by declaring what you want to get done, and the ETP helps you stick to the plan by with task, time, and scheduling support. Because it’s paper, it’s easy to keep your task list in view without fiddling with computer screens. Portable and always on, with ample space for note-taking, the ETP is designed to make your day more productive by serving as an anchor for your mind.

Auto Text Expander for Google Chrome

Ever get tired of typing out long email addresses, phrases you frequently use, or just looking to save keystrokes as you type? Well fear not! Auto Text Expander is here to solve that — it's kind of like TextExpander for Mac or AutoText for Windows, but installed and synced across Chrome browsers!

DragApp

In today’s digital ecosystem, your organization's conversations generally start and end with an email. Drag is a Chrome extension which turns Gmail into a Kanban board with a visual layout for managing your conversations and tasks. Drag was created to reduce the time users waste in their inbox by integrating the functionality of tools such as Trello. Drag turns your inbox into project management, CRM, collaboration, and help desk tools without having to switch back and forth between applications. The extension also features shared inboxes to help you easily manage your organizational accounts.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Discussing and negotiating salary can be uncomfortable for many professionals, and the feelings around salary discussions have become heightened during the pandemic. Is it “safe” to negotiate salary right now? YES. Do employers expect you to negotiate salary? ALSO YES. Here’s how:

  • Do your research: What you owe on your car or college loans is not relevant [to an employer] in salary discussions. Instead, use websites like Glassdoor to find salary ranges for your target company/industry/role.

  • Practice bringing it up: “I didn’t see it listed on the job description — would you mind sharing the range for this role?”

  • Anticipate offering your own salary requirements: It’s possible that an employer may not directly offer you a range, but instead ask for you to share your own salary requirements. Here’s sample language for your answer: “From my research, I understand that a [insert job title] at organizations this size typically land somewhere in the [$$$] range, and given my years of experience/qualifications I would hope to earn at least  [insert your desired salary].

Discussing salary can be challenging  (and it’s well documented that this disproportionately impacts women and BIPOC individuals). Conducting research will position you to anchor your questions/answers on your market worth, and will allow you to more successfully advocate for yourself. And don’t forget — you can also negotiate paid time off, professional development budget, freedom to work-from-home indefinitely, and job title (among other perks).

The Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique continues to gain popularity in the workplace. This simple method is well known for helping busy teams and professionals break through distractions and stay focused on the task at hand. But what is the Pomodoro Technique, and how does it improve productivity? Francisco Cirillo invented the technique, which got its name from the tomato kitchen timer he used to track his time (side note: Pomodoro means tomato in Italian). The technique consists of breaking work periods into 25-minute intervals, followed by a five-minute break. Once four work periods, or Pomodoros, have passed, you take a longer 15 to 20-minute break.
