Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

When should I tell my boss I’m planning on quitting?
|
I work with many school-based leaders who are already thinking a year into the future about whether or not they plan on returning to their campus. It can be tough to balance your desire to leave your school in a good place with your own concerns around job security and job happiness for the remainder of your tenure. So, when is it appropriate to tell your boss that you intend to start looking for a new job (whether you’re working in a school or elsewhere)? The answer is extremely dependent on your own individual situation - your existing relationships and your contract (if you have one).

There is a difference between when you NEED to tell an employer versus when you WANT to tell an employer. If you have really positive relationships within an organization and truly trust your boss and colleagues, you may feel a desire to provide notice as soon as you decide when you plan on exiting an organization (even if that exit is a year away). This can work really well for succession planning, and you can comfortably engage in a public job search (i.e. posting on LInkedIn asking for job leads and referrals). You might also feel more comfortable seeking support from your current colleagues in reviewing your application materials and serving as references.
In terms of when you need to give notice, it’s important to understand the difference between being an at-will employee or having an employment contract. If you are an at-will employee, like many American workers, you can technically give notice at any time (even if your employee handbook recommends 2 weeks). If you have an employment contract, it’s important to consult the terms regarding giving notice. It could be three weeks or even six months! Breaking a contract, depending on the terms, could result in unexpected consequences (like a teacher losing their licensure).
In general, most at-will employees in the United States provide at least 2 weeks notice. This allows employers some time to find a replacement, and gives employees the chance to tie up loose ends with projects and colleagues. You’re also more likely to maintain a positive relationship with your previous employer when you provide advanced notice.
