Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

When to ask sensitive questions about benefits and parental leave in an interview process?

A client of mine is considering growing her family in the next year and is curious about parental leave policies with different employers. She wonders, is asking about parental leave (or any other benefits) appropriate in a first interview? 


I don’t have a firm answer to this question. The reality is that parents - especially mothers  - may need to combat biases and stereotypes regarding their “commitment to work.” Bringing up childcare commitments or family planning early in a process can unfairly impact parents interviewing for new roles. As a parent, I’ve been fortunate to work at family-friendly organizations, but I also recognize that is not always the case for other professional parents. 


Some organizations may offer 8 weeks paid leave. Others offer 6 months. That’s a MAJOR difference and it is understandable that as a candidate you’d be interested to learn more. Organizations with best-in-class benefits will likely be proactive in sharing their offerings, including promoting the information within job descriptions and employer career pages. Other organizations will wait to share that information until an offer is made (this doesn’t mean their benefits are bad, it can just mean they didn’t think to promote them externally or chose not to). The reality is that bringing up any kind of personal commitments (elder care, sports leagues, ongoing volunteer work, medical therapies, etc.) can work against a candidate for a variety of reasons. Before asking about benefits in an initial interview, conduct your own research to see if the employer has proactively shared the information in their recruiting materials. You can also casually ask people in your network who may have insight. Unless the recruiter/hiring manager proactively brings up benefits/parental leave in an interview, I would caution against discussing the topic until an offer is made. 


You know yourself and your non-negotiables. If learning about leave policies and health care plans is top of mind, and will inform whether or not you continue in a process, then by all means bring it up. Here’s some sample language: “As I’m interviewing for jobs, learning about an organization’s different health care plans and various employee benefits is part of my research process. I didn’t see it shared on your website - would you mind emailing me that information as a follow-up to our conversation?”


Back to my client - given her own goals and non-negotiables, she chose to ask about parental leave and health benefits in a recent first interview AND was invited back for a final interview right away:)
