Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
How to provide compelling answers in a professional interview when your most recent experience is as a caregiver to children or other loved ones?
As a follow-up to last week’s Career Corner tackling caregiving career pauses on resumes, here are some insights for preparing for job interviews when all your recent experience is as an unpaid caregiver (like a stay at home parent or caretaker for a sick partner):
- In an interview, you will be asked questions about your experience, skills, and values that hopefully help the interviewer gauge your capacity to perform in their role at their organization.
- Interview questions, especially in an initial screen, will focus on your interest in the position and likely include “behavioral questions” which are pretty standard across industries. These questions sound like, “Tell me about a time you navigated conflict with a colleague” or “Tell me about a time you set a big goal at work.”
- It is likely that your interviewer will ask very work-specific questions, that reference colleagues, managers, stakeholders, big goals, etc. Don’t get stuck on language! If the interviewer has seen your resume, and they know you’ve had a significant career pause, they’re not expecting you to have current work-place examples. Instead, feel free to reference examples from recent volunteer work, involvement in your child’s school or your partner’s medical care, etc. Or, you can ask: “Would it be ok if I shared an older, but very relevant example from my last job?”
- Your caregiving career pause is a part of your experience and doesn’t have to be hidden in an interview. Reference it when you respond to “Tell us about yourself” by sharing your professional background and how you’ve most recently spent your time. Bring it back to the work you find energizing and what attracted you to this opportunity: “I spent over a decade in talent acquisition, sourcing, interviewing, and hiring thousands of educators for public school districts. I managed a small team and supported filling nearly 400 requisitions annually. In 2023, I stepped back from talent work to stay home caring for a sick relative, but am now re-entering the workforce. As I’ve reflected on the work that brings me energy, it’s definitely around recruitment strategy for large school districts. When I saw this role posted with your district, I knew it was a great fit and I’m so excited to be chatting with your team today.”
I said this last week, and I will shout it from the rooftops: Caregiving is critical work in our society! While there’s not always a roadmap for how to discuss caregiving responsibilities on job applications or in interviews, know that many professionals take career pauses for caregiving. You shouldn’t have to hide that experience when you interview.
