Who Is Ultimately Responsible For Career Development?

Despite employees reporting an increased desire for growth and development, many employers across the globe still aren’t offering enough in the way of learning opportunities. As organizations prepare to transform their talent development strategies to resolve this, there is often debate on who is ultimately responsible for employee development – is it the employee, the manager, or the organization?

Steps for making a career change

I’ve heard from several job-seekers recently who are interested in pursuing a career change but don’t know where to start. Here are some pro-tips:

  1. Focus on your career goals and personal value proposition. If your only goal is to leave a career you hate, you’ll quickly find yourself aimless and overwhelmed in a search.
  2. Once you have clarity on the job function and industry you’d like to pursue, ensure your job-seeking materials, such as a resume and LinkedIn profile, clearly demonstrate your capacity to perform this new job.
  3. Connect with people who are already in your target role to get insight into the market and your competitiveness as a candidate. They may identify certain credentials you are missing or provide feedback on your job-seeking approach. These individuals might also shed light on current market conditions that can impact your job search.
  4. Find your target employers on LinkedIn and follow their company page. You can also indicate that you’re interested in future opportunities with their organization on the about page of their LinkedIn company page (this is not available for all company pages, but exists for many large organizations).
  5. Utilize many resources to find target roles - job boards (check out TrulyHired), search hashtags on LinkedIn (ex: #educationjobs), ask your network to keep you in-mind for roles at their organizations, review target company career pages, etc.
  6. Track your job-search activity to identify trends in how your search is going. For example, if you find that you’re never getting called in for an interview, you might consider adapting your job-search strategy/materials or the roles you’re targeting.
