Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Recently, a client of mine had been working on preparing application materials to apply for a job opening, but the application closed by the time they went to apply. My client was so disappointed that they’d missed the window! Has that happened to you before? Here’s the language I suggested they use to follow-up with the job poster given that the role was no longer accepting applications, but they were still very excited about the organization:

Dear [Insert Recruiter Name],

I'm reaching out to briefly introduce myself as I've been following [name of organization] for some time and am energized by your organization's mission to [briefly reference mission/core business function]. I [state your current job function/industry] and have been exploring transitioning to [insert the new target job function/industry].

I recently came across [name of employer]’s [insert the job title] job posting, and saw strong alignment between my background and the needs of the role, but noticed the position was no longer posted by the time I went to apply.

I understand [insert organization name] is growing quickly, and so I wanted to take the time to reach out and reiterate my interest should there be new openings on the [insert team name] team in the future.

Would you or someone on your team be open to a very informal 15 minute conversation to help me learn more about the [insert team name] team and future priorities? Absolutely no pressure, and thanks in advance for considering! In case it's helpful, I've included a copy of my resume. I will also make sure to visit the [employer name] career page and apply should there be an aligned position.

Best, [your name]

This approach is personalized and honors the recruiter’s time by offering them an out. I can’t guarantee that the recruiter/hiring manager will respond or agree to a conversation. It’s possible they’ll simply direct you to their company career page. On the flip side, they may recognize that you’re interested in their organization and could be a great addition to the team should aligned positions open up, and take the time to cultivate a relationship and answer your questions.
