Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

When you see a job opening, it means that an employer has a problem to solve — a missing skill-set from their team or a need for more capacity. With that in mind, you should approach all aspects of the application & interview process on a mission to convince the employer that you are ready to solve their particular problem. In practice, this looks like:

  • Conduct research & informational interviews to learn about an organization’s major priorities and challenges.

  • Tailor your resume to highlight experiences & skills that are relevant to the role you’re applying to.

  • Personalize your cover letter to make clear that you’re excited and ready to solve the employer’s problem.

  • Ensure your interview answers convey your readiness to address their problems vs. what you hope to gain from a new role (i.e. “I understand your most pressing challenge right now is addressing low reading scores on your campus — with my graduate training in Literacy and my three years as a highly successful reading specialist, I’m ready and excited to take on this challenge” vs. “I’m hoping to grow and take on a new challenge in my career, and looking for a great working environment.”)

With an increasingly competitive applicant pool right now, make sure you’re taking the lead on connecting the dots for the employer on why you’re well positioned to add capacity and value.
