More thoughts on AI in your job search
I can’t stop thinking about the role that AI is playing in job-searching and hiring these days. A few months ago, we (the collective we, I mean) cautioned job-seekers around their AI use (generating cover letters with no customization, using it DURING an interview and reading chatGPT’s answers to employer’s questions, etc) and generally cover their tracks. Now, as more job-seekers are employing AI tools in their cover letters, interview prep, technical projects, and more, strategic employers are encouraging job-seekers to candidly and proudly share the ways they’re leveraging AI in their search to get a sense of how they’d thoughtfully use it on the job. This is interesting and exciting (depending on your thoughts around AI in general), and just another sign that mindsets shift quickly and so must our approach.
Employers who might ask you about the ways you use AI at work and on your job applications are likely not looking for “cheaters,” but rather, how you identify resources to save time on tasks, how you have embraced and quickly adopted new technologies, how you approach learning new technology, and how you continue to customize the more you learn about inputs and outputs.
In my work career coaching clients, I’m floored by the super users who are identifying novel ways to save time and maximize their productivity, work smarter not harder, and customize solutions. I’m floored by friends and colleagues who are using AI to prepare for difficult team meetings and identify compelling ways to share information with stakeholders. In the next few years, AI use will be the norm at work, regardless of your industry. I predict that more and more employers will want to hear how candidates are leveraging available tools to perform at a higher level. Embrace it! Learn to talk about it! I’ll be learning with you.
