Job-searching in the holiday season
With the Thanksgiving holiday upon us, we are now entering the winter holiday season. For the next two months, you can count on most* hiring processes to slow down or pause as professionals shut down their computers and take time off of work. Your emails may go unanswered, interview dates may be pushed into January, and hiring decisions may be delayed until the hiring team can come together for consensus. As a job seeker, this time period can feel like purgatory. Here are some recommendations:
- If you’ve been job-searching for a few months, take this time to evaluate your progress. Where are you having success, and where are you getting stuck?
- Research employers in your industry and check out job boards. Though networking is a highly effective strategy to learn about open roles and new employers, assume you’ll be doing less of it during this time.
- Send thank you emails or cards to people who have made an impact in your professional life - an old manager, a favorite colleague, a mentor, an acquaintance who gave you great advice, etc. Show gratitude all year, but it will feel especially great in November:)
- Assume the most generous interpretation if an employer’s communication is inconsistent during this time - the recruiting and hiring teams may be on vacation and setting some clear boundaries while they’re out of office. If you haven’t been given any updates about what you can expect in terms of process during the holiday season, it’s ok to send an email asking for clarity: “I understand many organizations slow down hiring during this time of year as folks take time off for the holidays. Please let me know if I should keep any time open over the next few weeks for potential interviews or assessments, or if you’ve adjusted timelines to reflect upcoming vacations and office closures.”
