What It Looks Like to Build a Pro-Black Organization

Building pro-Black organizations is a necessity if we are to achieve our goals of liberatory transformation. So what does it look like? It requires us to depart from solely challenging anti-Blackness or engaging in DEI efforts that don’t seek to shift power.

How Much Weight Should I Give to Job Titles?

I recently led a training for a group of education professionals seeking new roles, and I got a question that comes up a lot in my work with clients: “How do I navigate so many different job titles and seniority levels for the same type of role?” For example, one school district might call someone who manages an entire program at the system-level a “coordinator” while another district may call that person a “Managing Director”. No wonder job seekers get confused! Here’s my advice:

  • Do your research! Read a ton of job descriptions to understand trends in job titles. For example, you might find that in school leadership, a Dean job title is synonymous with the titles Assistant Principal, Director of Curriculum, Leadership Coach, and Instructional Specialist.
  • Review job descriptions to understand the scope of the role (direct reports, budget, functional areas the role will be overseeing). This will help you better contextualize the actual seniority of a role and how you match up given the current scope of your work.
  • If you find that you have a “Coordinator” title (but are leading an entire program, budget, team, etc.), you can put a qualifier statement in your resume that includes the scope of your work (when it’s more than what your title might suggest).  For example, if your current job title is “Director of Operations,” but you essentially serve as the Chief of Staff or Chief Operating Officer for your organization and you are targeted Chief-level roles, you can put a bullet under that role that says “Serve in the capacity of Chief Operating Officer for [name of org], overseeing the [insert functions you oversee] functions and a team of [insert number] direct reports.
  • Consider connecting with people who work at your target organizations for insight into job titles - be proactive in sharing the scope of the work you currently manage and your areas of expertise/interest, and ask what level of roles or teams you should target.
