Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Learning about an organization’s financial stability

Times are tough right now for organizations dependent on grants, federal dollars, and general fundraising. Understanding an organization’s finances during your interview process will help you make an informed decision about the organization’s stability before accepting an offer. Here is research you can do and questions to ask to learn more about an organization’s finances:

  • Review an organization’s finances via their Form 990, which is publicly available via websites such as ProPublica. There, you can learn about the organization’s revenue, expenses, fundraising costs, executive compensation, and other relevant information.
  • Websites like Charity Navigator can also provide you with a high-level overview of an organization’s finances and impact.
  • Review the organization’s annual report or state of the organization if easily accessible via their website. This is another way to learn about the organization’s finances, revenue, growth, newly awarded grants, etc.
  • Ask about the organization’s funding in the Q&A portion of your interview. You’ll want to get a sense of how dependent the organization is on federal grants and philanthropy versus revenue, fees, and local/state dollars. Here’s sample language: “I understand that funding is tight for many organizations in our space right now. Can you share with me how [name of organization] is currently funded, and how the current economic situation is impacting finances and programs in the short and long term?”
  • Similarly, you can ask your interviewer (especially if they are internal to the organization, versus an external recruiter) if the organization has had to carry out a reduction in force in recent years and how decisions were made.

Funding impacts organizations of all sizes, across all sectors. Conducting research and asking thoughtful questions will allow you to accept roles where there’s a long-term plan in place to generate funds and revenue.
