How Can You Truly Make a Difference for Black History Month?

While February is Black History month, it is also an opportunity for organizations to honor their commitment to Black people in the present. This article shares 6 ways to take meaningful action now.

How to Build Black History Month Campaigns That Truly Honor Black Communities

As consumers, we should have a critical eye on the way our organizations and partners share their commitment to racial justice. We’ve all received the inbox notifications with updated brand awareness statements, proposed shifts in business practices, etc, but what does that actually mean? This article cuts through the noise on how to share.

Women And The Pandemic Workplace: Leadership’s Critical New Challenges

Women have borne the brunt of this pandemic, at home and at work. As this study states, “while women constitute 47% of the U.S. labor force, they accounted for 54% of initial Covid-19 related job losses and still amount to 49% of those losses.” These numbers are even direr when looking specifically at women of color. This is one of the most robust studies about women in the workplace in times of COVID and what needs to change.

5 Powerful Ways to Take REAL Action on DEI

Organizations need scalable ways to ensure that their diversity & inclusion initiatives avoid common mistakes and are solid and sustainable. The REAL framework provides a dynamic structure all leaders can apply to their organizations when evaluating decisions through the lens of equity.

Understanding Organizational Barriers to A More Inclusive Workplace

This study defines inclusivity as feelings of “authenticity, belonging, and comfort participating in the workplace.” McKinsey broke down response data by race, by gender, by seniority to pull out trends and key questions to answer who feels like they can be themselves at work.

Diversity and Inclusion Best Practices to Focus on in 2021

This helpful blog lays out key definitions and differences between “diversity” and “inclusion,” as well as quantitative metrics about the impact of diversity on teams. Our favorite, given our work: “According to Deloitte, 67% of job seekers use diversity as an important factor when considering companies and job offers.” We agree!

Why You Need to Stop Using These Words and Phrases

One cannot talk about inclusion without including people with disabilities. However, many of us, unknowingly or not, still participate in the spread of ableism with our language every day. Ableist language shows up in different ways: as metaphors, jokes, or euphemisms. The article provides the reasons why we need to stop using these words and phrases.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Have you recently gotten a job offer that you don’t intend on taking? Here are my best practices for professionally declining:

  • Whatever you do, don’t ghost (disappear, avoid responding) the employer. I’ve been ghosted too many times by applicants and candidates, and I can tell you that it’s unprofessional and will ultimately ruin your chances of ever being considered for a role with that organization in the future.

  • Be timely. Once you decide to decline any offer or withdraw from a selection process, let the hiring team know. So much time goes into interviewing candidates - reviewing applications, setting up interviews with multiple stakeholders, and producing a lot of communications. The sooner you provide an update, the sooner they can make changes and notify the appropriate individuals.

  • When possible, provide honest feedback. Perhaps you realize the job function no longer aligns with your interests/skills, or you had an unprofessional  experience with the interview team. Your feedback can help improve a selection process or help you learn about more aligned openings on a team.

It can be really hard to decline an opportunity - the fear of letting someone else or yourself down is real! When done quickly and professionally, it can be a powerful tool for maintaining the relationship and positioning yourself for aligned opportunities in the future.
