Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Have a panel interview coming up and not sure what to expect or how to prepare? I share some insight and best practices below.
Panel interviews serve several purposes:
- The employer/hiring manager wants the existing team or peer group bought-into the hiring process and the candidate who is ultimately hired.
- The employer/hiring manager wants to give the candidate to meet their future team and/or peer group and feel bought-into the process and their potential colleagues/direct reports.
- The organization’s senior leadership, or the leadership of this particular team, is using panel interview participation as a leadership development opportunity for the participating panelists, especially if hiring or direct supervision is not a core part of their current job.
- The manager trusts the perspective of the panel and plans to use their feedback to inform their decision and/or how the role is structured.
Best practices when preparing for a panel interview:
- If it’s not already proactively shared by the recruiter or hiring manager, request the names or job functions/seniority of the panelists in your interview. If you’re not sure how to do this, here is some sample language: “I’m looking forward to my upcoming interview! As I’m preparing, I’d love to know who I’ll be speaking with during the hiring panel component. Can you share the names, job functions, or teams represented?”
- Don’t sit on that list of names and/or teams! If names are provided, learn more about their work via LinkedIn profiles/public posts or bios on the company website. If you feel strange about someone knowing you’ve reviewed their profile, send a connection request via LinkedIn: “I’m looking forward to meeting during my interview later this week.” They’ll view you as professional and prepared. Use the insight you gather to anticipate the kinds of questions you might be asked based on the primary function of that person. It’s also helpful to look for commonalities, like shared alma maters, hometowns, connections, or previous employers.
- Prep yourself for making eye contact during the actual interview. If this is more challenging for you, focus on the nose/forehead versus the eyes. Your hiring panel is hoping to learn more about your skills, values, and experience AND your communication style/presence.
- Prepare for mixed messaging. A panel interview can either highlight strong alignment between the panelists and hiring manager regarding their hopes and dreams for the role and the person who will fill it, or deep misalignment. If you do hear stark misalignment between each of the panelists, or between the panelists and hiring manager, consider strategic ways to share that observation (for example in the Q&A portion of the interview, or in a 1:1 with the hiring manager). There’s no need to say “get your sh*t together!” You can instead check for understanding and ask for clarity: “It’s been so wonderful to meet you all today. From your questions, it sounds like you envision the new hire able to work on a variety of focus areas and not just in [insert the primary function of the role]. Can you speak more to that balance, or how I’d primarily spend my time if hired?”
- Send a thank you email to all of the panelists! If you have their email addresses, consider individual emails to share gratitude and any connections you made to their own questions or reflections during the interview. If you don’t have access to their email addresses, you can write one thank you email and ask the hiring manager or recruiter to pass it along on your behalf.
