Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

A curious reader reached out to me to seek guidance on transitioning from the classroom to roles in Learning & Development. First of all, this transition is one that can be a natural fit for many current teachers! Learning & Development roles (also known as Organizational Development, Talent Development, Human Resources, Professional Learning, Instructional Leadership, Training, etc.) are suited for professionals with a knack for connecting with a large group of people, breaking down content and translating it for optimal learning, and a strong growth mindset. Sounds like a teacher, right? The main difference is that L&D professionals work with adults as opposed to children.

Here are some tips on approaching this transition:

  • Learn the requirements for the role. Review job descriptions and take note of preferred types of experience and Education/Training/Certifications. Are you a strong candidate, or do you need to seek out additional experience or training before applying?

  • You don’t necessarily have to leave your job as a teacher to get the necessary experience. You can support Professional Development work at your campus or district, both designing & facilitating professional learning experiences! Connect with your principal or another leader about opportunities to get involved.

  • When you apply for roles, make sure that your resume reflects your experience with Learning & Development work. Highlight anything you’ve done related to designing and facilitating professional development for your peers, team leadership (like being a department chair or grade level chair), student teacher mentoring, etc. Even if you’re not currently an L&D professional, your resume should make it explicitly clear that you have transferable skills and relevant experience.

  • Grow and activate your network of L&D professionals. Set-up informational interviews with professionals in the L&D space to gain insights about their work, learn what makes a competitive candidate, and, once you build relationships, consider asking them to refer you for open positions. Referrals are significantly more likely to be invited for an interview!
