How to Handle ‘Energy Vampires’ at Work

Have you ever had a coworker who has the ability to make you feel drained after a simple conversation with them? Perhaps somebody who spends all of their spare moments complaining about their problems without any plans to actually resolve them? If yes, then you might have encountered an 'energy vampire'. This article provides tips on how to

identify and handle 'energy vampires' at work.

Work Werewolves? The Future of Work is Asynchronous

Companies are waking up to the current problems with distributed work and see the need for more flexible solutions. Why did this happen? Because companies forced employees, no matter where they were, to abide by the same schedule. The solution might lie in asynchronous work. With an asynchronous work style, work gets done on time, people are less stressed, and it allows for a wider talent pool.

What WorkMonger is reading right now.

The 'Ghost Colleagues' of The Remote Workplace

Remote working during the pandemic shrank employees’ worlds. Now, some colleagues feel like they simply don’t exist in workers’ daily lives – and it's having an effect. That being said, there are ways to combat this problem and make the workplace more enjoyable for remote workers.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

How to follow up with recruiters for available opportunities if you missed their original message?

If you’re like me, you don’t check your junk folder often. Why would you? It’s mostly spam! But sometimes, important emails make their way there instead of your inbox. Let’s say you review your junk folder and find an email from a recruiter sharing a compelling job opportunity, but unfortunately it’s a year old. Or maybe the email actually went to your primary folder, or your LinkedIn inbox, and for whatever reason you didn’t get a chance to respond (Life happens! Emails go unread!). Should you respond now? And if so, how can you make the most of this opportunity weeks, months, or even a year later?

As long as the recruiter is working in your target industry, or for a trusted company/organization, I would encourage you to respond. Instead of immediately saying you’re interested or asking if the role is still available, consider this approach:

- Acknowledge the amount of time that has passed since they first reached out and that their original message was buried in your spam (trust me, most recruiters will understand!).

- Share that you understand that the position is likely filled, but you’d love to be considered for similar positions when they become available. Get specific about the kinds of positions that align well with your interests and areas of expertise.

- Ask if they’d be open to connecting via phone to chat about the roles they’re recruiting for at this time.

- Bonus tip - make sure to add that email address to your contact list so they don’t end up in spam again!

Fun fact - I actually found the recruitment email that launched my education/talent career buried in spam months after it was first sent. I could have ignored it (especially because I was embarrassed about the time that had passed), but I chose to respond. Though the recruiter was no longer available to meet with me, they connected me with a colleague. The rest is history!
