Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
Is it worth applying to a role that has been posted for more than a month?
|

Job-searching takes so much time, from networking to reviewing job boards to refining your resume and actually applying. For many, it can feel like a full-time job. Navigating your job search strategically requires deciding what is worth your time, and what is a waste. And here’s the truth - assuming you are qualified, you have the strongest shot of consideration when applying for a role within a few days of its posting. Here’s why:
- Recruiters and Hiring Managers want to fill positions as quickly as possible! The longer it takes to hire, the more costly the process (potentially hiring temps to staff the position until filled, # of hours spent by staff on interviewing when they could be working on other projects, $$$ on marketing a role, etc.)
- Though some recruiters/hiring managers might wait 1-2 weeks and review all applications at the same time, most hiring is done on a rolling basis until the position is filled. The sooner you apply, the sooner you can be considered.
- If a position is still posted after a month, it can mean many different things - the recruiter forgot to remove the role, they offered the job to someone else and the candidate declined, the hiring team hasn’t made an offer but perhaps have multiple strong candidates in the process, the salary/role requirements & seniority/market rate are not actually aligned, etc.
If you’re excited about a role, and it’s been posted for a month or longer, by all means consider applying. But I would consider reaching out to the job poster or an internal staff member with insight if they are still truly considering candidates and if they can share any context about their search and timeline.
