Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
|
Should you disclose that you were laid off as part of a “reduction in force” during your job search?
|
|
|
Layoffs are impacting professionals across industries. Tech and banking were first, and education is now experiencing its own wave. First of all - I’m so sorry if you find yourself navigating job insecurity or a layoff. I know how stressful that can be for you and any of your dependents.
If you have been part of a reduction in force as a result of organization-wide budget cuts or strategic shifts, know that you aren’t alone. This is not a reflection of your value, but a response to things outside of your control (org strategy, the economy, etc.). I would avoid being explicit about being part of a layoff in a resume or cover letter as that can distract from your overall story, but it’s perfectly fine to share that you were part of a recent layoff (especially since so many of them are very public!).
Here is when you might share this information:
- When answering the question “tell us about yourself” in an interview.
- When posting that you are open to opportunities on LinkedIn or other social media channels (and I encourage you to turn on “open to opportunities” on Linkedin - this is not a desperate move, but rather strategic as it notifies recruiters who are looking for talent that you’re ready to move quickly).
- When you reach out to friends and family.
You can discuss being part of the layoff without disparaging your former colleague (i.e. avoid bad-talking senior leadership, critiquing strategy or money handling).
Sample language:
“Up until recently, I was working at [name of company]. As you might know, the organization just underwent a sizeable reduction in force, and my role was eliminated along with many of my amazing colleagues. Though this wasn’t ideal, it did allow me to reflect on my areas of expertise and how I wanted to spend my time moving forward, and so when I read your job description I saw an incredible fit given my love for [insert job functions] and the needs of the role.”
From there, you can expand upon your strengths, your historic impact, and alignment with the role. Don’t spend too much time talking about the layoff, but rather your impact in previous roles and how that has positioned you to add value in your next role.
