Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

How do I quantify my qualitative impact?
|
|
|
“I’m just really good at building culture.”
“I’m the go-to account manager for disengaged clients.”
“I love coaching and am considered a strong mentor and leader.”
“I’m great at communicating between teams.”
“I’m a problem solver. I can see a challenge from many angles and come up with strategic solutions.”
What do all the statements above have in common? They are examples of qualitative impact, versus quantitative. The issue with qualitative statements is that you are asking someone else to take you at your word without providing actual proof of success or skill.
Here’s an approach to converting your qualitative strengths into distinct metrics:
- Create a list of your strengths, written as “I statements” (see the examples above, like “I build great team culture.”)
- For each of these strengths, generate at least two examples of proof for that statement. So for, “I build great team culture.” two proof points can include:
- Team retention data + compare it to the retention data on peer teams at your organization for a benchmark.
- Survey data related to your team feedback about your performance or their thoughts on team culture (if your organization doesn’t conduct these kinds of surveys, consider conducting an anonymous survey yourself).
- Make sure to capture this list and proof points on your resume, as you prepare for interviews and performance reviews, etc.
