Minimizing age bias

Are you concerned about age bias in your job search? Here is guidance I recently shared with a client with 30 years of experience who is currently navigating a job search:

  1. Don’t assume employers have negative assumptions about age. In fact, a hiring manager may realize that their current team lacks individuals with significant experience or credibility in a particular area, and be explicitly seeking veteran talent to train colleagues and/or shift the existing culture.
  2. Ensure your resume reflects current trends - that means removing objective statements, interest sections, and updating font from Times New Roman to Calibri, Arial, or Aptos.
  3. Remove graduation dates from your education section, and consider also removing experience that is more than 25 years old (especially if it’s redundant like the first of 7 teaching roles, or not relevant to your target role).
  4. Focus on your impact - let your experience and results make the case for why any employer would be lucky to hire you! That sounds like student outcomes, money raised, talent issues addressed, programs launched, projects completed, etc. Get VERY specific, with data points and names.
  5. Update or create your professional online presence through LinkedIn. Complete your profile and make it public.
  6. Highlight your technical skills and tech-savvy. The reality is that older professionals may face extra scrutiny regarding their ability to effectively use new technology - ensure you are clear on the tech products used in your target industry and reference them on your resume.
  7. Clarify your value proposition - i.e. the problems you solve for employers - and practice, practice, practice.
