Recent client wins

My recent clients are landing exciting new roles in nonprofit programming, finance, partnerships, and Instructional Support. Here are what these folks have in common:

  1. They immediately mapped out their network, both personally and professionally. This included identifying well-connected former colleagues and/or clients, or those who were actively hiring at target organizations. It also involved connecting with fraternity brothers and sorority sisters, connections from places of worship, running buddies, parents at their child’s school, friends from volunteering, etc. Then, they reached out and connected and/or reconnected.
  2. They tracked their job-search strategies and progress, and were open to changing their approach. This involved trackers of their own design (via google docs or microsoft excel), or through websites that offer free job-search trackers. They’d identify trends in their job-search strategy related to where they were getting stuck in the hiring stage (i.e. at the application versus the final interview), and change course accordingly (which might have involved changing the kinds of roles/employers they targeted, modifying their resumes and cover letters, or doing more interview preparation.
  3. They were realistic. They focused on lateral moves versus promotions, or roles that were less senior in scope. They made themselves open to in-person and hybrid positions, even though they preferred remote. They recognized that the length of their search may take longer than in years prior and cut back on spending and/or accepted short-term contracts or other roles to meet their financial obligations.
  4. They invested time into networking, applying, and interviewing. Job-seeking takes time. So much time! They dedicated a few hours a day or days per week to their search, keeping up momentum and ensuring they didn’t miss out on interesting opportunities.

Next week, we’ll be introducing a series of career corners covering job-searching strategy. You’ll see some familiar and new content, but our hope is that the strategies shared will support your current and/or future job-searches. Stay tuned!
