Does The Number of Applicants on LinkedIn Matter?
Have you ever seen a great job on LinkedIn and wondered how seriously to take the number of applicants that are featured on the job posting?
First of all, that number is not an accurate reflection of how many people have actually applied, but rather indicates how many people have applied via LinkedIn or shared their LinkedIn profile with the job poster. It shouldn’t deter you from applying as you have no idea if the other applicants are qualified or how you compare. Instead, it can just give you a data point as you’re understanding the job market and competition.
A more telling number on a job posting, whether on LinkedIn or other job boards, is the date when a job was posted. Has it been up for more than 2 months? Why? It’s an opportunity to get curious and visit the company website to determine if the job is still posted. It can also give you a sense of how far along the hiring team might be in the process - perhaps they are already conducting final interviews or making an offer. This also shouldn’t deter you from applying, but I would consider reaching out to the job poster to confirm if they’re still considering new applicants or are already close to making an offer.
