If you’re a jobs report nerd like everyone on our team is, you’ve likely come across the term “The Big Stay.” Coined as a response to 2022’s “Great Resignation,” The Big Stay addresses the rise in average tenure we’re seeing in 2025. This article pulls out the most important must-knows about the Big Stay- and the importance of a flexible, caring culture.

It used to be widespread knowledge that changing jobs- especially a lateral move to a competitor- was the easiest way to raise your salary quickly. However, for the first time since 2018, that’s changing! Check out Money’s take on the Great Stay and what the data shows about how the workforce is trying to keep pace with inflation.

Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

Best Practices for when you’re planning a career/industry/sector pivot:
|
|
|
I work with many clients who are exploring a career pivot. My colleagues on WorkTogether Talent Consulting’s Talent Services team interview and review the applications of jobseekers attempting a career pivot. These pivots can look like switching sectors (i.e. from a school district to an edtech nonprofit, or the federal government to a school district, from a national nonprofit to a small social impact organization, etc.). Here are the strategies we see the most successful career pivoters employ:
On their resumes:
- They translate industry speak. They audit the language in their resume and leverage job descriptions, insights from mentors, or AI to replace terms with more aligned language.
- They share relevant context. For example, they create a short description of what their current/former employers do and the scope of their work and don’t assume a hiring manager will immediately understand their role and reach by job title/employer name alone.
- They use lots of NUMBERS. Every bullet is the chance to share the story of your impact - goals achieved/exceeded, problems solved, team performance improved, money saved, revenue generated, student growth, etc are all examples of metrics to include in a bullet.
On their cover letters:
- They clearly answer the questions: “Why this employer? Why this job? Why should you hire me?” They also explicitly address: “Why am I making this career pivot?”
- They don’t copy and paste language directly from ChatGPT or another AI tool. They take the time to carefully personalize their letters and speak directly to the hiring manager through their words and tone.
- They demonstrate a clear understanding of the different context they’d be entering in this pivot, and can address why this speaks to them and why their unique background will position them to add value.
In interview answers:
- They don’t wait for a hiring manager to explain how this new sector is different from their old one. They’ve clearly done the research themselves, and can articulate a clear understanding of the differences and why those changes excite them.
- They don’t wait for a hiring manager to make connections about how their unique experience will translate into a new role. These successful candidates have done that heavy lifting, and can speak to how their work has been transferable and provide tangible answers.
- They don’t expect a hiring manager to fully understand their current/former experience. They provide enough context in interview answers that allows the hiring manager to understand their role/reach/stakeholders, make meaning of their answers, and see strong connections. As a colleague recently shared with me, she’d much rather hear: “I worked across 3 teams, and partnered most closely with the program team" versus "in our department, 9 different teams rolled up to our VP, worked with 3 of them frequently, except for when..."
Successful career pivoters conduct their research, translate their experience, and contextualize what they’ve done and want to do. They are not waiting around for someone to do it for them!
