Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter

 Checking LinkedIn

I recently received a text message from a friend I counseled months ago, updating me that he’d landed a dream role. He said I gave him a key piece of advice that made all the difference in his search. What was it, you ask? I had to ask myself the same question because he then went radio silent for a week (starting a new job and moving cross-country can keep one busy!)! At first I thought it might be ensuring his resume was filled with results versus responsibilities, or personalizing cover letters. We finally connected and here was his game changing job search move: checking & responding to LinkedIn messages.

My friend, like many of the jobseekers I support, doesn’t make a habit of checking/updating LinkedIn. As a result, he was missing out on a lot of messages from recruiters. After our conversation, he updated his profile to privately share with recruiters that he was open to new roles and ensured that his experience section was up-to-date.

He then made a habit of checking his profile a couple of times a week and responding to recruiters who’d sent him personalized messages, even when the position wasn’t completely aligned (this is a great strategy to learn about roles that are a better fit for your skills and interests). Fast forward a few months and he has just started an amazing role at one of the biggest tech companies in the world.

If you’re not actively engaging with LinkedIn, you may be missing out on connecting with potential employers and opportunities. Don’t forget to prioritize updating and leveraging LinkedIn as one part of your job-seeking strategy.
