Including data on your resume when you’re struggling to find data

A strong resume should include plenty of metrics illustrating your professional impact and the scope of past roles. For some job-seekers, this is easier said than done. Many of my clients come to me asking for support updating their job-seeking materials because their employers don’t track toward goals or there are no clear measures of success. When that’s the case, does that mean you’re destined to have a number-less resume? No!

Here are strategies for including quantifiable results and other metrics when your employer isn’t supplying you with an accessible dashboard or your manager doesn’t chat numbers in your check-ins:

  1. Identify the numbers you do know - The number of people on your team, the budget you managed or worked with, colleagues or clients who have used a system you created, satisfaction scores from stakeholders, number of people who attended an event you organized. If you aren’t 100% sure, I give you permission to ball-park it (i.e. “up to 30 participants” or “roughly $200,000 operating budget”) as long as you think that’s very close. Once you start brainstorming, you’ll find that even if you can’t say “increased revenue by 22%”, you can still share metrics like “developed new cold calling strategy adopted by 8 teammates, which has already begun yielding results in 2023”.
  2. Reflect on the problems you’ve tackled at work (i.e. updating an outdated system, closing academic gaps for students, tackling team culture, addressing skill gaps through professional development, etc.). What was the problem and did you solve it? How do you know you solved it? Even if you don’t have a number, you can share anecdotal information like “consistently recognized by colleagues for my ability to foster inclusive and healthy team dynamics; introduced culture-building activities in weekly team meetings for a 12-person team and launched an office-wide culture committee.”
  3. Partner with a colleague - they may be able to share insights about data they’ve collected or you can brainstorm ways to access information if you’re both struggling.
  4. Don’t wait for a manager to provide you with data - begin tracking on your own! It can be as simple as keeping a running list of initiatives you’re working on and any data you can collect to accompany it. Start bringing that data to your check-ins as well - your manager may learn something from you!
