Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
How to re-apply to a position you previously rejected?
A client of mine was interviewing with different employers a few months ago, and had the wonderful problem of choosing between two different job offers. Now, three months later, they fear they picked wrong. And the role this client declined (and has felt buyers remorse over declining) has been re-posted! Should they re-apply and see what happens?
My answer is YES, but first…
Yes, definitely re-apply! This employer offered my client the role a few months ago so it’s clear this person is qualified and compelling to the hiring team. BUT, the hiring team already has experience offering the client said role, which they declined. If my client simply re-applies without reaching out first, the hiring team will create their own narrative (which could be very wrong) about what might have happened and question the client’s self-awareness.
Instead, I advised my client to reach out to the recruiter they worked with in the past, and simply explain their change of heart:
I hope you’ve been well since we last connected. I really enjoyed working with you while I was interviewing for [role x], but at the time elected to accept a role with a different organization. Since joining my new organization, I’ve gained incredible experience in [list the high level skills/job function], but the scope of the role has recently shifted and is not as aligned as I’d initially hoped.
I’m following up because I remain excited about [org you declined], and [insert target role] in particular. I was thrilled to see the position had been re-posted as it has remained on my mind these last few months. I would love to resume discussing the ways I might leverage my strengths in [list your strengths] to add value to [insert org name]. I went ahead and re-submitted my application this morning, but am also reaching out directly to reiterate my interest and hopes that we can reconnect in the coming days.
In my previous recruiting days, seeing people re-apply to roles/orgs they’d previously rejected happened all the time. This is NORMAL. Assuming the candidate declined the position in a professional way (i.e. they actually declined versus ghosting the recruiter), they can absolutely re-establish a positive relationship with the recruiter and hiring team! We can’t go back in time, but we can contextualize our decisions to resume conversations transparently and productively.
