When do I tell my team and manager I’m leaving the organization?
|
|
|
“I am 100% certain I’m leaving my current organization. I haven’t told my team or manager yet. When is the best time to do this?”
I get some form of this question often from my school-based clients, typically in the Spring as the school year is in the final stretch. There is not a right or wrong answer here, but advice for how to align your communication timeline with your own goals and needs.
Notifying your team and manager that you’re leaving can allow for many things to happen: succession planning, knowledge transfer, and maintaining trust and positive relationships all around.
But, what if you don’t have another job lined up (and hope to), and need the security of a salary/benefits to maintain your own sanity white you job search? A client today asked me if choosing not to disclose their plans to leave was selfish. My answer, NO.
Sure, providing a long runway is in the best interest of your employer. And, if you worked hard to grow a program or lead a high performing school, you are personally invested in strong succession planning and knowledge transfer. That being said, you are not selfish for prioritizing your needs (salary/benefits) - our employers weigh their own financial stability in their decisions every day.
Every situation is different. You might find that your organization is willing and eager to hire exiting staff as short-term consultants, and that can allow for you to provide notice and ensure a paycheck while you look. You might find that telling your manager and team is the only thing that will motivate you to really invest in your job search. And you might find that telling your team/manager is more aligned with your leadership style than not, and you’re willing to take a risk.
As you consider when to share your plans to exit, consider your most pressing personal needs, whether or not telling your manager or colleagues can actually advance your job search (because they’re ready to make connections, serve as referrals, mentor you, etc.), and your personal goals.

Meeting Street Schools (MSS), a unique network of five schools across South Carolina, was founded on the belief that all students can learn and deserve the opportunity to receive a high-quality education, regardless of their socio-economic background. It is the network's belief that a student’s zip code should not determine a student’s access to quality education. MSS is looking for an Operations expert to be their new Director of Operations. The Director of Operations will be responsible for overseeing all school-level operations, and directly managing a small team of school-based staff.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of work experience including supervisory and management experience. Prior experience working in a school or school system, knowledge of school data and operations systems, and/or South Carolina state law and compliance is strongly preferred.
