Career Corner: Ask a Recruiter
I spend a lot of time on LinkedIn, where it seems like folks in Tech are posting about layoffs daily. Just like it’s important to save money for a rainy day, it’s also strategic to always be job-search ready (even if you’re happy at work and things feel stable). Your future self will thank you! Here’s how:
- Create a folder on your computer to store all your job-seeking documents. You’ll be so happy to not spend time digging for those documents in the future!
- Keep your resume up-to-date! That way, you have a document ready-to-share with your networks and accessible for job applications.
- Keep your LinkedIn profile up-to-date! LinkedIn is an important tool in both your passive and active job searches - don’t sleep on this one.
- Maintain a running list of your accomplishments, with plenty of metrics. If you’re a current educator - this means tracking student data, student growth, recognitions you’ve earned, etc. I often work with clients who need to spend a lot of time reaching out to former colleagues or going through very old emails and documents to track that kind of data down. Avoid having to do this on the back-end!
- Be open to connecting with recruiters and employers who reach out to you, even if you are incredibly happy in your current role and don’t intend to leave. Doing this allows you to grow your network of influential connections for future, active searches. And hey, you never know, you might learn that the role they’re offering is an even better fit for you in the present and decide to explore further (true story - I welcomed a conversation with a recruiter many years ago even though I was super content in my current role and landed a position with a pay increase and significantly more influence).
- Check-in with former colleagues, especially ones you really jived with in the past. It might be fun to reconnect with people you loved working with in the past, and you’ll learn about other organizations doing interesting work in your field.
- Do some light networking. You don’t have to go out of your way to reach out to recruiters or folks at your target companies, but if you meet someone interesting through friends or at a work event, consider following up to learn more about their work and stay in-touch.
